Getting Back into the FALL of Things

The best thing about fall, is that it means the holidays are just around the corner! Trust us that we are very aware of all the craziness that comes along with the holidays. So before things get too out of hand, we want to share some of our favorite spooky activities to do with the family while going Lo.Co (Life On. Cell Off™).

CARVING PUMPKINS

There is no chance of anyone using their devices during this spooky activity, as both hands will definitely be occupied and covered in pumpkin guts. Pumpkin carving will get messy, so go into this one with a plan. Here are some basic steps we recommend, to have a fun but clean time, creating your Jack-O’-Lanterns:

  • Be sure to pick the best pumpkin – poke around, pick it up and give it a good inspection. Make sure there are no rotting signs and that it seems overall healthy. Once you have carved your pumpkin, clean out all of the guts and seeds, to ensure the life of the pumpkin. If you live in a hot or humid city, consider keeping your pumpkin indoors – it would look great all lit up and sitting on the window seal.

  • Set-up your workspace – there is no away around the mess that comes with pumpkin carving, but that’s all part of the fun! So be sure you are working in a space you don’t mind getting messy – maybe take things outside. Line your working station with butcher paper, newspaper or paper bags and get carving.

  • Carve off the top of the pumpkin and clean out the seeds – this is the best part of pumpkin carving – the seeds! Be sure to cut a circle around the stem of your pumpkin and pop the top off. Then stick your hand inside the pumpkin and scoop out all of the gunk and the seeds. Clean the gunk off of the seeds, place them on a baking trey, ready for seasoning and cooking! Here is one of our favorite recipes for you to try: Roast Pumpkin and Squash Seeds

  • Sketch before you draw – Take a few minutes to gather your thoughts, figure out what design or character you want to sketch onto your pumpkin and trace the image prior to carving. Trust us that it always looks better in our mind than the real-deal. The carve away or paint as you desire – be sure to add candles inside the finished product, for the ultimate spooky effect! Or, maybe consider using a battery-operated LED flameless tea light(s) to light up your pumpkin(s) for safety purposes.

DECORATE YOUR FRONT DOOR

One of the best ways to take on the seasonal fun, is by decorating your front door to go along with the ever-changing colors of the season. It’s fun to get the whole family involved, making it a tradition, for all of the upcoming holiday possibilities. You can start with a spooky door for Halloween, move on to a festive-fall look for the month of November and then the endless December holiday possibilities. This is the entry and exit for everyone in the family, so the tradition and family decorative skills will not go unnoticed.

MAKE SPOOKY TREATS

Is there anything spookier than witch fingers and peanut butter eyeballs? A great device-free activity is getting everyone’s hands involved in creating scary treats. Maybe for everyone in your class, the next costume party or just for fun! Here are some of our favorite spooky treats that we just #GoLoCo for:

This year has absolutely flown by and we are too familiar with the chaos that comes with the holidays. But the holidays are also time for families and friends to come together, take time away from their devices and really try to be present and less distracted with the everyday stresses. We hope some of our #LoCo fall ideas can help bring tradition and quality time into your homes, screen free.

We want to see just how spooky things are getting – so be sure to tag @lifeoncelloff and show us all your fun-fall traditions for a chance to be featured on our page!
